Congratulations to the Grant Award Winner for Spring of 2023!

A $1,000 Research, EBP, and QI grant award is given to Dr. Helen Farrar for her research study "Description and Exploration of Nurse Perceptions of the Experience of Dying for Persons Across Community Settings."

Abstract

Dr. Farrar's bio: As a doctorally prepared nurse scientist with certifications in both geriatrics and psychiatric nursing, I have had the opportunity to be present during times of crisis for families and their loved ones. I have observed that decisions about care are complex, nuanced and can result in significant strain on every person and system involved. The journey through graduate programs led to research with isolated or vulnerable communities about their caregiving experiences. The academic faculty role built on my clinical expertise and research training to enable my current work as a health education specialist designing curricula for health professionals. With the generous support of the Sigma Theta Tau Beta Delta chapter, I and my interprofessional colleagues are privileged to continue to perform research that we are passionate about and contributes to the scientific foundation of nursing knowledge. The current project focuses on nurse perceptions of the caregiving experience across end-of-life delivery settings: home, inpatient, and social model home. The majority of information about the quality of care delivery in these settings does not focus on the perspective of the nurse and the evaluation of quality of care from this disciplinary lens. With the support of STT, our team hopes to explore and describe this phenomena through the eyes of the nurse; the most trusted and influential member of the healthcare team.
